The first generation Villager was launched alongside the Nissan Quest in July 1992 as a 1993 model and introduced at the 1992 Chicago show. After forgoing minivans since the 1986 Aerostar, it was the first Mercury since 1960 produced without a Ford or Lincoln counterpart. It used the front wheel drive Ford VX54 platform, an evolution of the 1989 to 1994 Nissan Maxima chassis, with a 112.2 inch wheelbase and single sliding door. Its model years run from 1993 to 1998.
