For 1974 Lincoln Mercury released the third generation Cougar, with design and marketing changes. One of the few American model lines to eschew downsizing in the mid 1970s, it grew in size and shared its body with the Mercury Montego and the later Ford Elite. Splitting from the Mustang, which became the subcompact Mustang II, the Cougar took a market position closer to the Ford Thunderbird. Its model years run from 1974 to 1976.
