The third generation Cougar for 1974 grew in size, moving to a 114 inch wheelbase on the rear wheel drive chassis of the Montego and Torino, and shifted to body on frame construction for the first time. All Cougars were offered under a single XR-7 trim level as the GT and Eliminator were retired. The third generation increased sales by nearly 50 percent over its 1971 to 1973 predecessor. Four engines were offered, with automatic transmissions only.
