For the 1971 model year Lincoln Mercury released the second generation Cougar, again sharing much of its bodyshell with the Ford Mustang. It began to shift away from a plush pony car toward both sporty cars and luxury cars, in competition with the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. This generation was the final version derived from the Mustang and the last offered as a convertible. Its model years run from 1971 to 1973.
