The fifth generation, the GE series, came as a sedan and a hatchback, with no station wagon, and in Japan the Capella name was dropped in favour of the Cronos and Efini MS-6 while export markets kept the 626 name. European sales began in January 1992. It was the first Mazda built in the United States, at Flat Rock, Michigan from 1 September 1992 as a 1993 model, and Wheels again named it Car of the Year in 1992. Its model years run from 1992 to 1996.
