European sales of the new fifth generation 626 began in January 1992, and Wheels magazine named it Car of the Year for a second time in 1992. For the first time for a Mazda, the 626 began to be built in the United States, at Flat Rock, Michigan, on 1 September 1992 for the 1993 model year. The Capella name was dropped in Japan for the Cronos and Efini MS-6, but export markets kept the 626 title. Ford used the platform for the Telstar and Probe.
