The 626 hatchbacks disappeared after 1991 from the American Mazda range. Since 1991 the Capella label had been used in Japan only for the lingering GV station wagon and van, because of Mazda's attempt at brand diversification, and the Cronos sedan and Efini MS-6 hatchback that launched in November 1991 were pitched to Japanese customers instead. The GD generation thus ended in 1991 in most markets. The generation used the updated GD platform with engines that emphasised torque over outright power.
