In 1994 a passenger side airbag was added to the 626, and some 1994 and 1995 2.0 liter automatics used Ford's EEC-IV diagnostic system. In Japan the new CG series Capella sedan was introduced in August 1994, on the CG platform designed for the upscale Mazda Lantis, and the Capella Cargo became the Capella Wagon. European models were available with four wheel steering until a mid 1994 adjustment. The 626 competed with the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona and Nissan Bluebird.
