The third generation LTD began production on 31 July 1978 at Louisville Assembly, joined by Atlanta, Los Angeles and Oakville, on the new Panther platform. It shed about 15 inches of length, 7 inches of wheelbase and more than 700 pounds against its 1978 predecessor, becoming externally smaller than the LTD II. Trim levels were revised for 1980 and the 4.2 liter V8 was added for 1981. Its model years run from 1979 to 1982.
