For 1979 the LTD was downsized, shedding about 15 inches of length and 7 inches of wheelbase and more than 700 pounds on the new Panther platform, and while remaining a full size car it became externally smaller than the LTD II. It was offered as two door and four door pillared sedans and a five door station wagon with the wood paneled Country Squire returning. The Custom 500 was discontinued in the United States.
