A Forester Sport with a CB18 1.8 liter direct injection turbocharged flat four engine was introduced in October 2020 for the Japanese domestic market. The fifth generation was in its second full year, with the e-Boxer for Europe and the 2.5 liter boxer for North America. The e-Boxer hybrid powertrain integrates an electric motor into the Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. The Forester has been awarded Motor Trend's SUV of the Year for 2009 and 2014.
