The BRZ of 2019 was in its eighth model year of the first generation, a front engine rear wheel drive 2+2 coupe with a boxer engine and 53 to 47 weight balance, built at Subaru's Ota, Gunma plant with its twin, the Toyota 86. It was one of the last model years before the end of the first generation in July 2020. Toyota bought 16.5 percent of Fuji Heavy Industries, which includes the Subaru automotive brand, in 2008. The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ were inspired by Toyota's earlier AE86, a small, light, front engine and rear drive Corolla variant popular for racing and drifting.
