The 2014 model year was the first full year of the third generation. Production of the United States sedan began at the Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation plant in Salamanca on 7 January 2014, its first model, and Thai production started at AutoAlliance Thailand on 14 March. The car reached the final of the European Car of the Year contest, and was chosen Best New Small Car in the Canadian Car of the Year ranking. By 22 January 2014 production totaled four million cars since June 2003.
