For the 2013 model year the CX-9 received a refresh with a new grille, new bumper, new headlights, new tail lights and restyled front vents, to align it with Mazda's Kodo design philosophy. It kept the 3.7 liter V6 built by Mazda and the six speed automatic, in a seven seat crossover that was still built at the Ujina plant in Hiroshima and exported abroad. The first generation was based on the Ford CD3 platform, and the Ford Edge was its close mechanical sibling.
