By 2014 the CX-9 was in its eighth year with the Kodo inspired refresh still to come in the next model year, carrying the 3.7 liter V6 with 274 horsepower and the six speed automatic transmission. It was the three row model at the top of Mazda's crossover range, based on the Ford CD3 platform shared with the Ford Edge, built in Hiroshima for export, and never sold in the Japanese home market. Three row side curtain airbags, roll stability control and a backup camera were part of the standard safety equipment.
