The CX-9 in 2012 was in its sixth year, with the 3.7 liter V6 of 204 kilowatts and a six speed automatic. It was Mazda's biggest passenger car, built in Hiroshima and based on the Ford CD3 platform, and was not offered in Japan, where it would later be replaced in the range by the shorter CX-8. The Kodo design refresh of the next model year was still to come. The CX-9 was built at Mazda's Ujina plant number one in Hiroshima but never sold in Japan.
