The powertrains for the 2012 S-Max included a 1.6 litre EcoBoost of 160 PS with start stop, a 2.0 litre EcoBoost of 203 or 240 PS with PowerShift automatic, and diesels from a 1.6 TDCi of 115 PS to a 2.2 TDCi of 200 PS, each with a six speed manual or automatic. The S-Max was a Ford designed mid size people carrier that shared parts with the Galaxy and the Mondeo, and it was sold only in Europe. Ford marketed it both as a multi purpose vehicle and as a sports activity vehicle, aimed at buyers who wanted space without giving up driving fun.
