The S-Max of 2011 was rated five stars and thirty six points, best in its class, by Euro NCAP. Safety equipment included an advanced neck protection system, a knee airbag and a thorax airbag, and a standard electronic stability programme. It was offered with a 1.6 or 2.0 litre EcoBoost petrol. Ford marketed it both as a multi purpose vehicle and as a sports activity vehicle, aimed at buyers who wanted space without giving up driving fun.
