The R2 of 2009 was in its seventh year and the last full year of sales, a kei car with an inline 658 cc four cylinder engine in three versions, among them the supercharged and intercooled R2 Type S. The car was inspired in name by the Subaru R-2 built from 1969 to 1972, and was discontinued the following year, in 2010. The R2 exterior dimensions are largely similar to its predecessor, the Subaru Pleo. Fuji Heavy Industries made the R2 for sale in Japan as a kei car.
