The 2004 Mountaineer was the third year of the second generation, a mid size luxury SUV with the design language introduced for 2002, which also appeared on the Grand Marquis, Montego, Milan, Monterey and Mariner. It was assembled at Louisville Assembly, and at St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood until 2007, as the Mercury counterpart of the Explorer. The Mountaineer was a mid size luxury SUV and the divisional counterpart of the Ford Explorer.
