The 2003 Mountaineer was the second year of the second generation, a mid size luxury SUV and divisional counterpart of the Ford Explorer, redesigned alongside the five door Explorer. It carried the new Mercury design language previewed by the 2000 Los Angeles show concept. Ford assembled it at Louisville Assembly, with additional production at St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood. It was sold by Mercury as the brand's only SUV in its larger size.
