2005 was the final model year of the second generation Mountaineer, a mid size luxury SUV introduced for 2002 alongside the five door Ford Explorer, with the design language that Mercury used on the Grand Marquis, Montego, Milan, Monterey and Mariner. The third generation followed for 2006, again serving as a counterpart of the Ford Explorer, with features carried over from the discontinued Aviator. It was assembled by Ford at Louisville Assembly in Kentucky.
