The Subaru R2, a small car made by Fuji Heavy Industries for sale in Japan, was the first production Subaru to wear a new family look that included an aviation inspired spread wings grille, also used on the Tribeca and the Impreza. Three versions of the inline 658 cc four cylinder engine were offered in 2003, and the car had a deliberately rounded, less space efficient form than the squarish Pleo. Fuji Heavy Industries made the R2 for sale in Japan as a kei car.
