The Ford ZX2 was the last Escort, and for 2003 its front fascia was revised with larger intakes and a rectangular grille between the headlamps. In June 2003 the final ZX2 was assembled, and at the end of the 2003 model year Ford retired the ZX2, ending the Escort line in North America. The Focus, introduced in 2000, had taken over the role of the compact Ford in the lineup. The Escort name had been in North American use since 1981.
