The Thunderbird returned for 2002 after a break of several years as a two seat convertible that recalled the first generation, shown at the 1999 Detroit show and built at Ford's Wixom plant from June 2001. It had an optional removable hardtop, a Jaguar derived 3.9 liter AJ35 V8 and the DEW platform. Motor Trend named it Car of the Year for 2002, and Ford offered a Neiman Marcus edition of 200 cars, in black with a silver hardtop, at 41,995 dollars.
