A 3500 model was added for 2001, with the introduction of the HD moniker, as the new GMT800 Silverado and Sierra heavy duty trucks were released a year after the light duty trucks. The heavy duty GMT400 pickups, built alongside the GMT400 SUVs, had been continued until 2000. The Sierra was the GMC badged twin of the Chevrolet Silverado in these years. The 2001 Sierra 3500 and the HD trucks followed in this model year, a year after the first GMT800 pickups.
