In 2000 Mazda built the 626 MPS, a Mazda Performance Series concept sedan which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show and of which only a few were produced. The North American 626 got a nearly invisible facelift with front side airbags, and Edmunds described it as a bland, bread and butter sedan that was not big enough for families and not sporty enough for enthusiasts. It was by then in the fourth year of the sixth generation.
