The 626 in 2001 was in the fifth year of its sixth and last generation on the GF platform, shared with the Capella and the Ford Telstar. The Michigan built North American 626 resembled its predecessor, lacking the aggression of the world car, and was considerably larger, while Europe offered the LXI, GXI and GSI trims with a 2.0 liter engine. The Mazda6 that would replace it was planned for 2002. The 626 competed with the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona and Nissan Bluebird.
