The Capella was lightly updated in 1999 with a new interior and exterior, cabin air filtration, an available turbo diesel engine, a new Activematic manually operated automatic transmission, and available EBD and DSC stability control. The Capella badge lived on with the wagon and van versions of the previous GV series until 1999, and the Capella Van, for commercial use only, continued until April 1999. The hatchback was popular in Australasia and Europe but was not sold in Japan.
