For 1997 the only change in the North American Celica lineup was the discontinuation of the GT coupe. Another minor change was given to Japanese market Celicas in December 1997, and variable valve timing came in certain Japanese models starting from December 1997. It was model year 5 of 6 in the Toyota Celica (sixth generation, T200), 1993 to 1999, coming after the 1996 model year and before the 1998 model year.
