The XV20 became the 1997 Camry in the United States, where the SE trim was discontinued and the entry model took the new name CE. It was named to the Ten Best list of Car and Driver for its V6, and in Europe it launched that year in sedan form only, as the 2.2i GL or the 3.0i GX. This was the first model year of the Toyota Camry (fourth generation, XV20), 1997 to 2001, which took over from the Toyota Camry (third generation, XV10); the 1998 model year follows it.
