The Sambar of 1997 was in its eighth year of the fifth generation, a 660 cc kei cabover truck and microvan with the supercharged option at 55 PS and the EMPi engine at 46 PS, ahead of the redesign of 1998 when the kei class vehicle size regulations were relaxed to allow a larger body. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo.
