To address safety concerns with side impact resistance, on 1 October 1998 the width restriction for kei vehicles was increased to 1,480 millimeters and the Sambar was widened accordingly. The Sambar was redesigned from 1998, as kei class vehicle size regulations allowed an increase in body size, and the sixth generation followed in February 1999. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction.
