The Sambar of 1996 was in its seventh year of the fifth generation, with the 660 cc EN07 engine and EMPi option, a retro Dias Classic package and the permanent Dias Wagon trim for the 4WD version. It continued the rear engine rear drive cabover layout that was the last in the kei class. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo.
