The MX-3 had not been sold in North America since 1997 or earlier, and it continued in other markets such as Japan, where it was the Autozam AZ-3 and later also the Mazda AZ-3, and in Canada as the Precidia. The car was only built for one generation, as the MX-5 proved more popular, and as the Japanese asset price bubble took its toll Mazda had to cut back models that were not selling. Mazda referred to the car as a four seater, but the rear seats suited small passengers.
