The MX-3 was marketed until 1998, when it was cancelled as the Japanese asset price bubble forced Mazda to cut back models that were not selling well. It was a single generation car, never replaced directly, whose V6 had been among the smallest on the market, offering a balanced and smooth running engine with a peaky power delivery, which project manager Tadayuki Hayashi, an avid motorcyclist, enjoyed. Its V6 engine belonged to the Mazda K-series and used a variable length intake manifold, which Mazda called the Variable Resonance Induction System.
