The 1996 model year was the last of the second generation Tracer, and the last for the LTS, which was produced through the 1996 model year as the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Escort LX-E. The Trio package continued to be available through 1996, and the automatic seat belts were retained. The Tracer sedan and wagon had been offered with just two trim levels throughout this generation. The Tracer was a front wheel drive compact derived from the Mazda 323 and Protege.
