The Protege became classified as a compact car for the 1995 model year in North America, and was sold for a single year in Canada as the 323 GS. In Europe the coupe was named the Mazda 323C and was available until September 1998 with 1.3 liter SOHC and 1.5 liter DOHC engines. The eighth generation Familia was in its second year, a saloon built in Hiroshima. Mazda built the Familia at its Hiroshima plant and also assembled it from knock down kits in several countries.
