Local building of the Laser in Australia stopped on 4 September 1994 when the Flemington plant closed, and the Japanese built KJ arrived in October as the Laser Lynx three door and Laser Liata five door. In Japan the BHA dropped every sporting model after poor sales. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323.
