Prior to the Impreza joining the World Rally Championship in 1993, the Subaru World Rally Team had fielded its larger mid size Legacy. With the rest of the rally competition shifting to smaller and lighter chassis, Subaru introduced the smaller Impreza. GL trim levels were either front wheel drive, which Subaru badged 2WD, or all wheel drive, badged AWD. The Impreza is a compact car built by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992.
