In 1992 Ford purchased a 50 percent stake in the Flat Rock plant where the Probe was built, which had been Mazda Motor Manufacturing USA, turning it into AutoAlliance International. It was the last model year of the first generation Probe, which would be completely redesigned for 1993. By then the car had been sold as a front wheel drive counterpart of the Mazda MX-6 for four model years. The Probe's counterpart, the MX-6, was Mazda's version.
