The 1991 Probe was given a four star crash rating in collision tests conducted by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It remained a front wheel drive coupe built at the Flat Rock plant in Michigan, in GL, LX and GT forms, with the 2.2 liter four in GL and LX form, the turbocharged four in the GT and the 3.0 liter V6 as an LX option. Ford kept the Probe's body a hatchback coupe.
