The Mark 3 Astra was released in October 1991, the first Vauxhall Astra to share the Opel Astra name, since from 1991 Opel has used the Astra nameplate on its B and C platform. The first two generations of the Vauxhall Astra had been right hand drive versions of the Opel Kadett for the UK, and most versions of the third were built at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. The Mk3 followed the Mk2 in October 1991.
