In 1989 the high performance 3.0 liter Essex V6 petrol engine of the Transit was replaced by the Cologne 2.9 liter EFI V6, mainly because of emission regulations, as the Essex V6 design was nearly twenty five years old by then. The VE6 Transit otherwise continued with its one box body and Pinto and York engines, built in Southampton and Genk and sold widely. It remained a one box van introduced in 1986 with a changed front suspension.
