The Summit was introduced for 1989 as a sedan in DL and LX trim, both with a 1.5 liter eight valve four cylinder engine making 81 horsepower, with a 1.6 liter sixteen valve twin cam engine of 123 horsepower available on the LX. Its 100.7 cubic feet of interior space put it in the compact class while most rivals were still subcompacts, and rear legroom was a highlight. Sales began in August 1988, and the Summit joined the Dodge and Plymouth Colt.
