The fifth generation Carina was released in May 1988, and the Surf wagon and Van versions underwent a full model change to bring them in line with their siblings. In December 1988 a full time All-Trac four wheel drive system with a center differential was added to the sedan. This was the first model year of the Toyota Carina (fifth generation, T170), 1988 to 1991, which took over from the Toyota Carina (fourth generation, T150); the 1989 model year follows it.
