The Bongo of 1987 was in its fifth year of the third generation, with a mid height roof, only available on the 2WD models, and a diesel engined four wheel drive version. During the 1980s Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi all sold versions of their utility vans in the United States, but Mazda decided not to bring the Bongo to the US and created the MPV instead. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range.
