The Bongo of 1988 was in its sixth year of the third generation, sold in Japan, Australia and other export markets as the E series, and by Ford as the Econovan and Spectron, with petrol engines from 1.4 liter to 2.0 liter and a 2.2 liter diesel. In the same year Mazda created the MPV for the American market instead. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
