For 1987 the naming was aligned with most of Mazda's export markets, with the 323 badge replacing GLC in North America, and a wagon was added to the lineup. In January 1987 a personal coupe version with its own bodywork, the Etude, was added. When the saloons and hatchbacks got new engines in late 1987, the vans continued to use the old E series units for a little longer. In Europe the Familia was sold as the 323, and in Colombia local production followed.
