A factory built convertible body was introduced in March 1986 in both the Mazda 323 and the Ford Laser versions, initially with the 1.5 liter turbocharged E5T engine. Production of the older wagons continued to 1986, when a new front wheel drive model was introduced. The project to build the car in Indonesia was given the go ahead in 1986 by Mazda's Keiji Asano on a trip there. Mazda built the Familia at its Hiroshima plant and also assembled it from knock down kits in several countries.
